Willow-Leaf Sunflower (Helianthus salicifolius)

Captured Sept. 19th at Jerry Smith Park

One of my favorite sunflowers, the Willow-Leaf sunflower graces the autumn prairie. The name comes from the narrow leaves growing along the stems.

This plant has a limited geographical range, found mainly in rocky prairies and roadsides in eastern Kansas and western Missouri. Flowering begins in August, but the foliage provides interest year round.
