A widely used medicinal plant, yarrow has been used often to treat wounds and stop bleeding. During the Civil War it was called soldier’s woundwort because it was so widely used to treat battle wound. The fern-like leaves have a medicinal taste. I was on a plant walk once and got stung by a bee. The guide of the tour recommended I chew some up and use it as a poultice, which I did. This is a common native plant which grows well in pastures and roadside, as well as in native grasslands.
In the wild the flowers are mostly white but can be pink. Horticulturalists have tapped into this natural variation to breed the dark pink, red, and yellow cultivars popular among gardeners.
